New Helltaker levels were poop/Examtaker Review

Posted by treeese - May 11th, 2021

Helltaker got an update today to commemorate the game's 1 year anniversary which had a whole new little series of levels. I was excited to see how the game's story would develop and how the gameplay would change, and, well...vanripper got the first one down. The new chapter's story is pretty neat and opens the door for a lot of cool stories down the road. But the levels...sucked. They're (in my opinion, at least) way too difficult. While I like the idea of introducing lasers into the already barren gameplay of Helltaker and featuring more real-timey bullet hell stuff, in practice they were often used in frustrating ways where the player was not allowed to stop and think about what to do next. In a fucking PUZZLE GAME. Other times the levels were so incredibly complex that it felt like there was absolutely no way to beat them. Oh, and the boss was also mega-ass. HT's controls are simply not fluid enough to withstand the stress of such a precise fight without it being frustrating and, well...mega-ass.

So yeah, the new HT content was sadly kinda shitty. Not even the new Mittsies music was as good as the main game's. Oh well, guess we've got all this new lore to look forward to in the comics, right? And we've got this new character, in addition to some new designs for Lucy and Justice, which is cool. Can't wait to see how people...*cough* "interpret" them, if you get what I mean.

I give Examtaker a 4/7, it's closer to a 3 than a 5. Was pretty let down by this one, to be frank.
